The Oxford Police would like to
remind residents to have a safe and happy Halloween. Parents are always
urged to accompany younger children whenever possible during trick or treating.
As always, the police will have an officer stationed at the corner of Belvidere
Ave. and Lincoln Rd. along with members of the Oxford Emergency Squad. The
police department will be in full force during trick or treat and officers will
be available to assist where needed. Members of the Emergency Squad will
also be in force throughout town to assist where needed.
As a service to the
Oxford Community, the police department would like to offer the following tips
for a safe Halloween.
- Parents should assist their
children in planning a safe route for trick or treating. Set up a time
for their return home and strictly enforce that rule.
- If you are unable to
accompany your children during trick or treat, make sure that you know what
route they are taking.
- Let your children know not
to cut through fields or yards. Make sure they know to stay in
populated areas and don't go off the beaten path. Stay in well lighted
areas.
- Instruct your children not
to eat any treats until they bring them home to be thoroughly examined by a
parent or an adult.
- Instruct your child never
to go into the home of a stranger or to get into their car.
- Make sure that your child
carries a flashlight, glow stick or any other means to make sure they are
visible to vehicles.
- Make sure that you check
your child's costume before leaving the house to ensure that the costume is
safe. Any costumes with masks should have eye holes large enough so
that your child's peripheral vision is not obstructed. Costumes should
be short enough as not to cause your child to trip and possibly fall.
If parents have any
questions concerning Halloween safety or any other matters, please feel free
to call the police department at (908) 453-4133
